Llevé mi espíritu al mar

Letra:

Y vino la sensación de paz calmando mi inquietud;

Llevé mi espiritú al pinar, oculto el cielo allí;
Sentí una llama interior ardiendo fuerte en mí;
maravilloso se me abrió delante el porvenir.

English Lyrics:

I brought my spirit to the sea, I stood upon the shore.
I gazed upon infinity, I heard the waters roar.
And then there came a sense of peace, some whisper calmed my soul.
Some ancient ministry of stars had made my spirit whole.

I brought my spirit to the trees that loomed against the sky.
I touched each wandering careless breeze to know if God was nigh.
And then I felt an inner flame that fiercely burned my tears.
Upright, I rose from bended knee to meet the asking years.

This is hymn number 4 ["I Brought My Spirit to the Sea"] in Singing the Living Tradition, but with a different tune. The melody used here, DRINK TO ME ONLY WITH THINE EYES, was first published (with lyrics from a love poem) c. 1790 by John Wall Callcott (English, 1766-1821), who may have been its composer or arranger. The lyrics were written in 1934 by Max Kapp (American, 1904-1979). Kapp set his lyrics to the tune used here. The translation © 2002 is by Gaylord E. Smith (American, b. 1939). This hymn was not chosen for Las voces del camino. Perhaps the tune used in Singing the Living Tradition was commissioned because DRINK TO ME ONLY WITH THINE EYES is too well-known among English-speakers with its traditional lyrics. But it is much easier to sing (and prettier?), and Spanish-speakers are not going to relate it to any other lyrics.
