Gracias a la vida

Thanks be to life that has given me so much.
It gave me two eyes so that when I open them
I perfectly distinguish black from white,
and in the heavens its starry background,
and in the multitudes the people that I love.

Thanks be to life that has given me so much.
It has given me sound and the alphabet,
with it the words that I think and declare:
mother, friend, brother and light illuminating
the route along which I am now traveling.

It has given me the marching of my tired feet;
with them I walked through cities and puddles,
beaches and deserts, mountains and plains,
and your house, your street, your courtyard.

Thanks be to life that has given me so much.
It has given me laughter and it has given me weeping;
that way I distinguish happiness from heartbreak,
the two substances that form my singing,
and your singing that is the same song.

and everyone's singing that is my own song.
