American Avocet

The avocet is a year round resident of Monterey County. This picture, taken at Elkhorn Slough, shows a male adult bird in its winter colors. The female's bill is generally more curved. This bird's head and neck turn a rust color during the breeding season. They inhabit shallow ponds and marshes and feed by sweeping their bill from side to side through the water.

Avoceta americana

Se encuentra la avoceta en el condado de Monterey durante todo el año. En esta foto, sacada en el Estero de Elkhorn, se ve el macho en el invierno. La hembra tiene por lo general el pico más curvado. Durante la temporada de reproducción se pone rojizo el color de la cabeza y del cuello . Habita estanques y pantanos poco profundos donde se alimenta moviendo el pico de un lado a otro por el agua.
